Lee Bollinger

A noted first amendment legal scholar, Columbia University President Lee Bollinger was at the center of two major 2003 U.S. Supreme Court cases challenging affirmative action policies at the University of Michigan, where he previously served as president. His two highly acclaimed contributions to first amendment literature include “Images of a Free Press,” published by the University of Chicago Press in 1991 and “The Tolerant Society: Freedom of Speech and Extremist Speech in America,” published in 1986 by Oxford University Press. Bollinger made headlines in September 2007 when Columbia hosted a lecture from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
