Joe Klein’s political column for TIME, “In the Arena,” appears each week, and he is a regular contributor to TIME.com’s political blog, “Swampland.” He has written several cover stories, including profiles of U.S. Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. His weekly columns cover the Middle East, presidential politics and elections. Klein joined TIME in 2003.

In 1996, Klein anonymously wrote the critically acclaimed roman à clef novel Primary Colors, based upon the 1992 Presidential race. The novel spent 25 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, spending nine weeks at number one. His follow-up political novel was The Running Mate. His most recent work, published in 2006, is Politics Lost: How American Democracy Was Trivialized By People Who Think You’re Stupid. He is also the author of The Natural: the Misunderstood Presidency of Bill Clinton, Payback: Five Marines After Vietnam and Woody Guthrie: A Life. Klein is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Peter Khiss Award, which honors outstanding reporting on New York City government and public affairs. He has twice received the National Headliner award for best magazine column. Klein graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in American Civilization. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a former Guggenheim fellow.
