As Executive Director of the Northland Rangelands Trust, Ian Craig has spent most of his life in northern Kenya and is familiar with the challenges of wildlife conservation and community development in the region. He has developed a personal relationship with many communities based on a foundation of trust, continuity, shared experiences, and a common vision. Mr. Craig was a founding board member of both Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust and Il Ngwesi Group Ranch in 1995. As Executive Director of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, he was a founding member of the Northern Rangelands Trust together with key individuals from the community member areas.

Founder of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) in northern Kenya, Ian Craig discusses how he believes wildlife conservation can spawn development in East Africa. In 1995, Mr. Craig turned his more than 40,000-acre cattle ranch on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya into a conservancy with a mandate to protect the wildlife of of the area. Today, LWC is home to more than 25 percent of the world’s threatened Grevy’s zebra population, 31 indigenous black rhino, and 30 white rhino along with other native animals.
