Warren Bickel, Ph.D., has joined the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as director of the new Arkansas Center on Addictive Behaviors, a joint program of the UAMS Colleges of Medicine and Public Health.

Bickel is also Wilbur D. Mills chair of alcoholism and drug abuse prevention in the UAMS College of Medicine and director of the Interdisciplinary Tobacco Program in the UAMS College of Public Health.

Bickel was recruited from the University of Vermont in Burlington where he was a professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology, interim chair of the Department of Psychiatry and director of the Chittenden Center, an addictions treatment program. Bickel has experience in examining the behavioral processes that underlie drug dependence in humans and has conducted research that examines novel cost-effective ways to deliver treatment.

Dr. Warren Bickel, the Wilbur D. Mills chair of Alcohol Abuse and Drug Prevention at UAMS, discusses "The Tyranny of Small Decisions" as it relates to everything from climate change and the financial crisis in America, to drug abuse, gambling and obesity. Dr. Bickel addresses how these and other challenges of and for our modern society derive in large part from the same root cause.
